A plate of tasty food

The Loire Valley has a reputation for good food at reasonable prices and a typically french atmosphere. The lunch-time menus are an experience not to be missed, with a good selection to choose from; typically a starter, main course, cheese and dessert for 12€, with wine often included in the price.

There is a plentiful choice of restaurants with fine cuisine and Michelin stars. We are always happy to give recommendations and make a reservation for you.


Market scene

France is well known for its excellent food markets and the Loire Valley is no exception. There is great pride is selling fresh produce and great enjoyment in taking it home to cook and eat. Have a look at our page about markets in the local area for more details.

Local Produce

There are two excellent market gardens in Parcay les Pins for fresh vegetables and fruit all grown locally. Close by at Vernantes is a well stocked supermarket, and there is a hyper-market at Bourgueil.

The mushroom caves near Saumur house the largest exhibition in Europe of wild mushrooms and fungi – over 200 species – and also produce a vast quantity of mushrooms to send all over the world.
Pommes tapees
Pommes tapees are a local gourmet speciality prepared from apples in a tuffeau oven which is situated in a cellar-cave.
Asparagus is a local delicacy which is grown in the fields nearby and available directly from the local producers.
Strawberries are grown in Parçay Les Pins and the early season gariguette strawberries have exceptional flavour. Buy them ready to eat or pick your own – as many as you can eat.

We can provide you with free-range eggs and fresh vegetables when in season from our garden.
